Caring For Your Dress Shirts

A great dress shirt wardrobe can go a long way towards projecting an image of success. Though quality and fit is quite important to achieving a great look, how you care for these dress shirts can make a big difference in the "return on your investment" department. How long a great dress shirt will last is in direct correlation to how you care for it.

Here are a few rules:

- Launder your dress shirts. Dry cleaning uses extremely harsh chemicals that degrades the cotton faster than a regular wash. Its best to ask your Dry cleaner to launder your shirts. If you wash them yourself, use a mild cycle and go easy on the detergent.

- Light to no Starch. Starch flattens and hardens the fibers of cotton causing them to be brittle. You will see fibers break causing pilings and "fuzzyness" much earlier because of starch.

- Watch how you press. Pressing a shirt is an art form all to its self and learning to press it right can have you looking sharp all day. The best option is to find a great cleaner to press them for you. With that said look for tell tale signs of bad quality press work, such as indentations at seams, broken buttons, shiny collars and creases on the cuffs.

In time dress shirts do give out, its just a fact of life. One way to extend the life of a dress shirt is to find a great custom shirt maker to replace existing collars and cuffs with white ones. Collars and cuffs are the first things to go and replacing them with white ones gives it the "Wall Street" look all while maximizing your investment.

When its all said and done caring for your dress shirts is a tell tale sign of a well dressed man, and with the best dress shirts out there costing hundreds of dollars each, getting the most out of them is just a smart move.
